THE MAKING OF A REALIST PAINTER

THE GENESIS OF PEOPLE WATCHING

Unbeknownst to my family, between the ages of two and three, the high fevers of three childhood diseases destroyed most of my hearing. By the time my hearing loss was discovered, I had already learned to cope and communicate by reading lips, facial expressions and body language. Being a consummate people watcher was the genesis of my fascination with the human face and form and my obsession to "capture" it. Consequently, my work is centered upon portraiture and portraying the human figure.

My hearing loss has been the single most influential factor in my art. The challenge of losing the majority of my hearing forced me to be dependent on the visual world around me and to be acutely observant and focused in order to hear and communicate. This blessing in disguise has gifted me with increased visual perception, sensitivity and insights which benefit me in every area of my life. My narrative paintings and drawings are a visual journal and expression of gratitude inspired by real life experiences and interactions with my family and close friends.
